São Paulo, July 5, 2024 – Committed to humanitarian aid in Brazil for 13 years, LATAM’s Solidarity Plane program has just completed the transport of 308 modular houses donated by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) for the population of Rio Grande do Sul, along with over 2,400 pairs of rubber boots donated by the Government of Peru, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to help protect people moving through flood-affected regions.

With this, the airline’s program has reached a total of 200 tons of donations (including food baskets, water, disposable diapers, blankets, and other items) and 130 volunteers (doctors, nurses, veterinarians, and firefighters) transported free of charge to the area since May 4, 2024. LATAM’s humanitarian transports were carried out both on the company’s commercial flights to airports in the region and on special flights to the Canoas Air Base (RS), including donations from countries such as Portugal and the USA.

TRANSPORT OF MODULAR HOUSES AND RUBBER BOOTS

UNHCR has been a partner of LATAM’s Solidarity Plane program since April 2022, and the transport of these emergency houses to Brazil is coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The emergency housing units are structures designed to provide more dignity and security to sheltered families. They accommodate families of four to six members and have a lifespan of three to five years.

The transport of rubber boots to help protect people in flooded areas was carried out at the request of INDECI (National Institute of Civil Defense) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with Hombro a Hombro, an NGO partner of the Solidarity Plane in Peru.

To address the impacts of the calamity, LATAM has also been involved in the free transport of donations collected by its partners in Brazil (Movimento União BR, CVC, and Fraport Fortaleza), with logistical support from the Government of the State of Santa Catarina to deliver donations from Florianópolis Airport (SC) to Rio Grande do Sul.

For 13 years, LATAM’s Solidarity Plane program, in conjunction with partner institutions, has benefited more than 140 million people in Brazil by providing free transport of over 4,600 animals and 282 million COVID-19 vaccines to all Brazilian states.
