LAN Colombia made its first commercial flight with biofuel in an Airbus A320, with 174 passengers on board, promoting sustainable industrial development in the region. This test flight, conducted with the support of Terpel, used a second-generation biofuel as an energy source, which can be produced from any renewable biological carbon material such as algae, jatropha, halophytes and camelina, or organic residues such as vegetable oils.
For this first flight, a blend of 31% biofuel and 69% Jet A1 fuel, traditionally used in commercial flights, was used. While flights using biofuel are not regular, LAN Colombia will gradually increase the use of environment friendly biofuel.
LAN CARGO Colombia participated in the event by inviting several cargo agencies including Kuehne & Nagel, DHL and Cargomaster. An explanatory presentation was given in Cali, which was attended by the Minister of Environment; the Manager of Marca País; the president of Terpel; Hernan Passman, CEO of LAN Colombia; and Francisco Arana, Director Operations, together with Maria Victoria Guiza, Sales Manager MDE, both from LAN CARGO Colombia.
